Abstract: The concern about corrosion in buried pipelines has increased with time. This is due mainly to the aging of the pipeline coating protection, which gives rise to defects in the coating, leaving exposed bare metal to the corrosive soil in which the pipeline is located. Moreover, if there is not enough cathodic protection, it will give rise to corrosion phenomena at the surface pipeline and so causing unexpected failures, including leaks, increasing the cost of maintenance and rehabilitation, and also decreasing safety operation levels, whether for workers and people living nearby pipeline facilities. Direct Current Voltage Gradient technique (DCVG) besides locating coating defects which are potential sites of corrosion in a buried pipeline, also indicates the corrosion status at each defect, their severity in terms of cathodic protection current consumption. However, all this information acquires even great relevance when correlated with the operation conditions of the cathodic protection system, in order to give some recommendations leading to the corrosion mitigation and/or eradication together with an optimised and safe operation of the pipelines and their cathodic protection.
