Knowing the velocity required to entrain solids in pipelines during cleaning can be
an important design parameter to avoid solids buildup in front of pigs that can stick the pig. Design information on the velocity required to entrain solids is presented for sediment and debris in pipelines such as iron sulfide, iron carbonate, black powder and sand is presented for various solids subject to a shape factor that can be used to estimate when progressive pigging, jetting devices or gel pigs are required to allow safe passage of pigs through a pipeline in oil in oil or water. |
