Abstract: Reliability-Based Design and Assessment (RBDA) principles are currently used for most structural systems, including buildings, bridges and nuclear containments. These methods, which are still not commonly used for pipelines, have been shown to have significant benefits over conventional methods including a) consistent and improved overall safety; b) better allocation of resources and overall cost savings; c) an ability to address unique design situations involving mew materials and severe loading conditions; and d) an integrated approach to design and maintenance decisions.

The objective of this paper is to demonstrate the practicality and benefits of RBDA methods through example applications. These examples are described after a brief overview of the RBDA methodology. A more detailed description of the methodology is provided in Nessim and Zhou (2005a).
