Abstract: If you are in the pipeline industry of any fashion, in particular an owner/operator, get ready for more requirements on accountability of your natural gas and liquid product(s), pipeline(s), and integrity condition(s) – especially in the United States. President George W. Bush has signed the “Pipeline Integrity Bill” which legislatively will regulate pipeline integrity programs. Office of Pipeline Safety, (OPS) is presently reviewing regulations to govern this legislation. In general, this bill will require pipeline companies to smart pig their lines or use some other form of integrity assurance method(s) beginning every ten (10) years; then every seven (7) years; and finally, standard - every five (5) years. Presently, liquid pipelines are already at five (5) years in the United States. Internal inspections, using various types of technical ILI tools or other integrity methods, are and will be in greater demand in the future for our industry.
