Abstract: This paper will discuss the typical pipeline pig’s design. This will include how the different shapes of the components and materials used relate to the performance of the pig as it makes its journey through the line. Various limitations of pigs will be outlined due to their physical design verses the geometric shape of the surface to be cleaned. The limitations of commonly used solvents will be discussed along with what is required to make cleaning fluids more efficient. To demonstrate how the pig runs can be enhanced, a number of case histories will be discussed describing the benefits that designed pigging fluids have over commonly used pigging procedures.
