Abstract: The pipeline industry is critically important in all countries that produce and transport oil/gas and liquid chemical products. It is also a potentially dangerous industry, because it is comprised of high energy containment systems, failures of which can lead to casualties, pollution of environment and great economic losses. Pipelines may also be a prime target for a terrorist attack. Pipeline companies must therefore have a comprehensive, sophisticated maintenance system in place, utilizing the best of current science and technology. Such maintenance systems provide for pipeline integrity having the added benefit of driving down the overall expenses.
