Abstract: Risk-Based Inspection (RBI) is a method for inspection planning of systems or components, based on evaluation of economic, environmental or safety risk associated with their failure.

RBI has been a popular topic in recent years, and many authors have presented general RBI principles. However, most presentations have described a general RBI approach without including details of the philosophy and methodology in practice, i.e. for the determination of the inspection plan.

This paper presents a brief summary of RBI principles and methodology adopted within DNV, and introduces the inspection planning software “ORBIT Pipeline”. A detailed practical example of RBI planning of the first inspection for a pipeline with possible corrosion is presented. The potential benefit of performing the inspection and the updated inspection plan based on the findings of the first inspection is shown.
