Abstract: In facing challenges the regulators and pipeline industry are taking some bold steps into uncharted waters in an effort to maintain a national pipeline infrastructure that will continue to deliver petroleum products and natural gas to consumers in a safe and economical manner. I have a very strong concern that in their response to the many pressures, there seems to be a trend toward short-term fixes to relieve the pressures and make the current year's bottom line look good. There does not appear to be a clear picture, industry-wide, of what the long-term effects of today's actions will bring. I'm particularly concerned about the effects on safety and integrity of the operating systems over the long term. This presentation focuses on several key activities and issues that the regulators and industry are either addressing or should be concerned.
