Abstract: This paper reports results of a research program aimed at developing simple models to simulate the motion of pigs driven by incompressible fluids. The models are based on fundamental fluid and solid mechanics principles, that are able to capture the relationship among the parameters that control pig motion. These are pig velocity, driving pressure, contact (friction) forces, positive and negative by-pass flow. The paper presents results of controlled laboratory experiments designed to validate numerical and analytical models for friction and hydrodynamic forces acting on different kinds of by-pass pigs. Experimental results have shown satisfactory agreement with the predictions of the simple models.
