Abstract: To summarize this presentation, we would just like to emphasize the following: Most believe that normal on-stream pigging programs are adequate. Most companies buy inexpensive, non- effective cleaning pigs, and then choose to run these pigs as little as possible. Pigging is an overhead, a maintenance cost, something that has been eliminated or drastically reduced over the years. Today, governmental organizations require new pipelines be piggable and those lines that are piggable must be inspected routinely. We are finding that these inspections with the geometry tools and corrosion-detection tools require a line be clean to assure results. Therefore, today's pipelines require they be cleaner than ever before, and cleaning pigs must perform better than ever before to remove the debris that would interfere with the data being recorded. The whole purpose of running an inspection pig is to detect a problem before a failure occurs. However, had the line been cleaned and maintained effectively throughout its life with an effective cleaning-pig program, there would be less need for using inspection pigs, or the results of those inspections would not require costly repairs.
