Abstract: As international pipeline systems grow in age, it is of ever-increasing importance that the technology and services are made available to operators to determine the true state of their pipes. The introduction of intelligent pigs marked a major step in achieving this goal. Different tools are commercially available which can reliably detect geometric anomalies and metal-loss defects, as well as certain categories of crack.

True integrity assessment based on flaw- and defect detection must include full utilization of available non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques and their implementation into a pipeline environment. New tools are being developed to achieve this.

Furthermore, fitness-for-purpose methods must be applied to help decision making. A new advanced fitness-for-purpose approach will be introduced.

In the long term, reliable safe-life assessments would be desirable. The paper will introduce problems on the way.
