Abstract: Gathering pipelines usually start at production facilities in order to carry product from the wellhead to the initial processing or collection point. Transmission lines proceeded to processing facilities, onward to marketing facilities, and then to the final users. Pipeline construction dictated using the most efficient routes and components; in many cases, what was efficient then was, and still is, an impediment to pigging operations.

Some of these impediments should be examined to define why they are impediments or restrictions to normal and ILI (in-line inspection) pigging operations. The first set of impediments or restrictions will be defined as mechanical, and the second set will refer to product properties and operating conditions.
