Abstract: Severn Trent's Digital Mapping facility is based around Intergraph hardware and software, running on the VMS operating system. Central to the project is a Vax 1250 mini computer from which all other machines are usually controlled. This includes three interactive workstations, known as Interacts, which are used mainly for the digitisation and checking of map records. The main aid to this process is Interactive Graphics Design Software (IGDS), the dominant features of which are menu driven operator interface, optional 2D/3D database, over 200 commands for graphical generation and manipulation, and interaction with inhouse and Intergraph software. The IGDS builds a 32 bit database with over four billion points of resolution available in a 3D space. The Interacts are standard dual screen graphics workstations that can also be used as alphanumeric terminals. There are also three specialised alphanumerics that are used for system customisation and database management. A parallel software tool to IGDS, known as the Data Management and Retrieval System (DMRS) is operated from these alphanumerics. Its purpose is the creation and management of textual descriptive information associated with IGDS graphical elements.
