Abstract: The paper looks briefly into techniques previously used for branching off pipelines to extend services and problems faced by Gas and Water Industries in doing so. This provides an insight to reasons behind the development of large diameter underpressure branch saddles for polyethylene pipe systems. The work undertaken during the development of large diameter connections and under-pressure drilling equipment, as well as the production methods involved, is discussed more thoroughly. Finally the results of the development work are highlighted with a case study on the real life installations.
