Abstract: If the Water Industry is to meet the demands of a modern society effectively we cannot rely much longer on assets invested in the Victorian Era. Many of the large diameter cast iron watermains, a large proportion of which are beneath the centres of towns and cities, are in urgent need of renovation or replacement. Much lip service has been paid in the last few years to the need to assess the condition of our underground assets and set up realistic renovation/replacement programmes but it is suggested that in reality little is being done. It remains in many cases a matter of out of sight out of mind.

This paper discusses the replacement by sliplining of one such water main laid 137 years ago which a condition investigation revealed to have extensive external corrosion.
