Abstract: As British Gas continues to develop offshore resources, production tubing and wellhead components are exposed to a more corrosive environment.

Corrosion inhibitors are used increasingly in gas production to protect metal components from deterioration. However, there is evidence that some inhibitors attack elastomers resulting in degradation of their physical properties which leads to premature failure.

In this paper, the test methods for evaluating the effects of commercially available inhibitors on non-metallics are discussed, illustrating the importance of ensuring compatibility between the inhibitors and elastomer used.
