Abstract: The Controlled Depth Tow Method (CDTM) of pipeline installation has been carried out in the north Sea since 1980. Twenty-four individual tows have been performed ranging between the Heidrun Field in the North and Embla Field in the South. The tow of a pipeline bundle is carried out at a controlled depth well clear of the seabed while being sufficiently below the surface to exclude surface effects. The pipeline bundle, the longest to date being 6700 metres long is suspended between two tugs and towed through the water at between 3 and 6 knots and over distances of up to 1000km.
