Abstract: The first recorded use of Flexible Pipe was 1942 when an armoured lead alloy pipe was developed for the transport of petrol across the channel. By the end of the war over 700 km of this pipe had been laid but the small diameter and low pressure ratings restricted its use. To improve the design of the pipe various research projects were conducted in the 50s and 60s. This paper shall look at the development of flexible pipe and how the basic design of a plastic tube reinforced with various steel layers is put to use. The important steps in the development program shall be reviewed along with the technical limits of current applications. These applications include deep water pipelines, sour service oil production and dynamic risers.
