Abstract: The design of a pressure reduction station in British Gas East Midlands is the result of the efforts of many departments. The basis of the design is determined by a policy making committee and it is necessary for the departments involved in a new design concept not only to get any change in policy approved, but to ensure that the details of the design are agreed by all.

This involves a large amount of interdepartmental communication and discussion and it is the aim of this paper to give a flavour of this process and uses as a vehicle the design of a particular installation with certain novel features.
