Abstract: The demand for deep-water pipelines is established. Many design problems become easier (or disappear altogether), but structural design is more difficult, because of the inevitably large external pressure at great depths. It is clear that a conventionally designed and constructed pipeline has to have a high wall thickness to resist the pressure. A little but not much can be done to reduce the wall thickness by a more refined understanding of the mechanics of collapse.

The paper explores various alternative design strategies that offer possibilities of major savings in costs, among them radically different structural designs and different construction and operation strategies.
