Abstract: This paper details the work accomplished by Marine Consulting during the installation of two submerged pipelines on the Sicilian coast, launched from shore by means of the direct pull method, and laid in place with the support of a crane barge and divers. The installation of new 34-in pipelines was necessary as a consequence of the extension and reinforcement of an existing breakwater, which required the abandonment of a considerable length of the existing lines. At the same time, there was also a requirement to repair the pipelines, which involved the replacement of two sections, one of 170m and the other of 15m in length. Marine Consulting was awarded the project on an EPIC contract basis, and the company undertook the engineering, procurement, construction, and installation elements of the new facilities as prime contractor.

The paper focuses on the installation procedures adopted for the preparation and setting-up of the onshore pipeline launch system, excavation, cutting, and removal of the redundant or damaged sections of the existing lines, and metrology, installation, and tie-in of the new pipelines by means of mechanical connectors. The high value of the D/t ratio of the existing pipeline, and therefore its low capacity to withstand bending stress, compounded by a heavy concrete coating, required particular attention and accuracy when approaching the installation. This was imperative in order to avoid any excessive bending stress and strains, which might have buckled the pipelines.
