Abstract: During the last 30 years the alignment of the main shipping route in the Ems estuary, located between the Netherlands and Germany, and known as the Ostfriesische Gaatje, has gradually moved westward as a result of morphological processes. Due to this movement, and to soil erosion of the seabed at the eastern side of the mudflat, known as the Paapsand, a reduction in the cover of the Gasunie Gastransport Services 42-in gas transmission pipeline crossing has occurred over approximately 800m of its length.
