Abstract: Conventional cathodic protection wisdom accommodates the activities of the sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB) by specifying a further depression of protection potential of 100 mV, from -850 to -950 mV (CSE). This is of little value to the designer as he needs to size his anodes or ground-bed sufficient to provide the protection current to achieve this lower potential. The current required is not defined. Work, mostly unpublished, is presented which offers better guidelines to designers and operators. This work compares seminal NPL cautions as to where and when simplistic rules can be applied.
