Abstract: Lay-up or mothballing are terms for the ways and means of preventing deterioration of temporarily-redundant capital goods. Recession, high interest rates, and over-capacity all contribute to negate planned plant profitability. The options: sell, scrap or lay-up/mothball, are considered and a graphical method of continuous cost benefit analysis is presented. The cost of uncertainties associated with the lay-up duration are also discussed.
