Abstract: Reinforced concrete in immersed or water-saturated conditions can fail prematurely if the steel reinforcement corrodes. Usually the steel does not corrode because it is in a benign, high pH environment encapsulated in concrete. If the pH of the concrete falls or sufficient chloride reaches the steel to cause depassivation, then active corrosion can ensue. One option which can be taken to prevent steel corrosion is applying cathodic protection.
