Abstract: The corrosion of steel reinforcement in reinforced concrete is a growing world-wide problem, ranging from localized disfigurement to the occasional catastrophic collapse of a major structure. Detecting the presence and extent of damage is difficult and costly. Remedial work is rarely aesthetically or structurally satisfying and is very expensive. Failures of large structures have major economic consequences on local or even national budgets. As examples, six high rise flats in one small town in North England showed extensive corrosion after only six years; the cost (in 1975) of repairing each building exceeded £25OK, representing 15% of initial construction cost.
