Abstract: The corrosion of metals in aqueous environments is an electrochemical phenomenon. Two related, but quite distinct, processes occur on the surfaces of damp or immersed metals to give rise to the effects we collectively refer to as corrosion (weight loss, generalized or in the form of pitting attack, often accompanied by the formation of insoluble corrosion products which may be closely adherent-and protective to a greater or lesser degree-or loose and bulky). These processes are the anodic reaction. If a metal is immersed in water or an aqueous solution, the metal passes into solution as cations leaving electrons, i.e. a negative charge, on the metal, until an equilibrium potential is established between metal and solution that is characteristic of the two.
