Abstract: Anerobic corrosion of ferrous metals in the presence of bacteria has been attributed to cathodic depolarisation by the bacterial hydrogenase system. Much support for this theory has come from studies of corrosion in the presence of sulphate reducing bacteria. However, investigation of the corrosion in the presence of sulphate reducing bacteria is complicated by the formation of sulphide ions and in particular by the production of iron sulphides which are known to be corrosive to ferrous metals.
