Abstract: A pipeline will invariably contain defects at some stage during its life that exceed workmanship acceptance levels. An assessment is required to determine whether the defects affect the integrity of the pipeline. Fitness-for-service may be determined by a variety of methods, ranging from previous relevant experience, to small or full-scale testing, to an engineering critical assessment.

The Pipeline Defect Assessment Manual Joint Industry Project (the PDAM JIP) was founded in 1998 by Andrew Palmer & Associates (later Penspen Limited, UK) to review the published methods for assessing defects in pipelines (corrosion, dents, gouges, weld defects, etc.), with the objective of developing a comprehensive manual documenting the best available methods for the assessment of defects in pipelines. The manual was based on an extensive review of the published literature, and a comparison of the methods against the test data. The first edition of PDAM was issued in 2003 and last revised in 2006. The PDAM JIP issued PDAM Edition 2 (or PDAM 2 for short) in 2016†. The literature published in the intervening period was reviewed, the literature reviews were updated, and the appropriate changes were made to the manual.

An overview of the main changes in PDAM 2 are presented in this paper. A commentary is also given on what has not changed and what that means for the limits on the current understanding of the assessment of defects in pipelines.
