Abstract: THE DEVELOPMENT OF geographic-information system (GIS) tools enables the integration of data coming from many different sources into a database to be modelled and analysed. Frequently, GIS is used to perform regional slope analyses due to the possibilities of assessing large-area stabilities even under seismic conditions. The basic principle of the methods were outlined almost 25 years ago [8] and can be applied to pipeline route selection or optimization. This paper presents a case study for the selection of a gas pipeline route in Italy. The method is described and results are discussed to highlight some critical issues and hidden aspects of the GIS- based approach.
