Abstract: THE PROBLEM of stress-corrosion cracking is nowadays of great interest to many engineers working in the area of operational reliability of high-pressure pipelines. This specific kind of corrosion is a rather complex process and, until now, it has not been sufficiently explored and understood. It is, however, generally recognized that it requires an initial sharp defect to exist in the surface layer of the pipe wall, for the local tensile stress to be high, and for a path to be open for the aggressive medium to get into the root of the defect.
