Abstract: The growing use of smaller-diameter and longer-length pipelines in the offshore industry has become the topic of much research in recent years because of the need to exploit smaller oilfields as the larger fields become depleted. To transport extracted oil from smaller fields to existing installations requires the use of long pipelines. Risk assessments completed on these kinds of pipelines have proved they are safety critical to damage caused by dropped objects from offshore installations, sea vessels, and fishermen's trawling gear, which can result in loss of containment. This type of damage causes financial and environmental implications which affect everyone and everything involved.
