Abstract: Standard engineering-critical assessment (ECA) concepts are used for assessing flawed girth welds in existing pipelines. However, an ECA cannot prevent the repair or removal of ‘innocent’ flaws. One of the reasons for this is that the assumptions made in performing the assessment do not reflect the actual situation. The correct characterization of the flaws detected (normally large cold cracks) and the determination of representative fracture toughness are the limiting factors. This paper describes how practical solutions can be developed for this, and other related problems.
